The final part of the disabled access in Kent series is going to be a bit of a weird one. Fitness is a key interest of mine, as I was a Paralympic swimmer and currently promote health and fitness for disabled people on YouTube. I thought I’d look into disabled access gyms in and around the Kent area. I feel that keeping fit and healthy is one of the most important aspects when you are a disabled person. In short, the fitter and healthier you are, the easier your day to day life is.
Disabled Access Gyms In Kent
Main Criteria
So what did I consider when looking for disabled access gyms in Kent? As a disabled person that regularly goes to the gym, I know exactly what to look for.
The following are the four main criteria I consider to be most important.
1. Disabled parking,
2. No stairs,
3. Wide doors and of course,
4. Disabled changing and toilet facilities.
The Gym Can Be A Stressful Experience
Going to the gym can be a very stressful experience for a disabled person. You can feel that you’re constantly being judged. In addition, when you first go, you don’t really know where to start in terms of what is an appropriate workout or how to train.
On top of that, you don’t need the extra hassle of knowing whether you can actually park at your gym. So I looked into which gyms had disabled parking for blue badge holders with enough space to get your wheelchair out. Plus sufficient space to get your massive gym bag with all your protein supplements in!
I then looked into whether they had flat access. You don’t want your first exercise at the gym to be clambering through the door because they’re not wide enough. Or for there to be a massive great step that even the bodybuilder standing next to you would struggle to get you through!
Changing and Toilet Facilities
Finally, I looked into changing and toilet facilities because let’s face it, there’s no such thing as a short workout. With the amount of water you drink you’re going to need the bathroom at least once. And changing facilities are important too as there is nothing better than walking out the gym after your workout freshly showered and ready to drink that protein shake that the personal trainer recommended.
So without further ado, I present to you the best Gyms with disabled access in Kent 2018!
